What is Kundalini Yoga?
Kundalini Yoga is a powerful and transformative practice that blends physical movement, breathwork, sound, and meditation to awaken a dormant energy that lies at the base of the spine. Known as the “yoga of awareness,” Kundalini Yoga is designed not only to strengthen the body but also to elevate consciousness, helping practitioners connect deeply with their inner selves and the universe around them.

The Practice of Kundalini
The word kundalini refers to the coiled energy that yogic philosophy says resides at the base of the spine, like a serpent. This energy, once awakened, travels upward through the body’s energy centers, or chakras, activating each one until it reaches the crown chakra at the top of the head. When this process occurs, practitioners often report experiencing heightened states of awareness, clarity, creativity, and spiritual insight.
Rooted in ancient Indian spiritual traditions, Kundalini Yoga was brought to the West in the late 1960s by Yogi Bhajan, a spiritual teacher who believed this once-guarded practice should be accessible to everyone. Prior to that time, Kundalini techniques were kept secret and were typically passed down only to select disciples. Yogi Bhajan introduced a structured form of Kundalini Yoga that integrates elements from various spiritual and yogic systems, making it suitable for modern lifestyles while preserving its deeply spiritual essence.

A typical Kundalini Yoga class consists of a kriya, which is a specific sequence of postures, breath patterns, and sounds (mantras) designed to produce a particular energetic or emotional effect. These kriyas can vary widely: some focus on physical strength and flexibility, while others target emotional release, stress relief, or enhanced intuition. Classes often begin with a warm-up followed by the kriya, then a period of deep relaxation, and conclude with a meditation. One of the defining features of Kundalini Yoga is the use of chanting, particularly the repetition of mantras such as “Sat Nam,” which means “truth is my identity.”

“Dan is one of the best yoga teachers. He’s inclusive, supportive, and a lot of fun. The yoga he teaches encompasses everything: physical, spiritual, emotional, and sensual. I always leave the session on a high. I highly recommend him.“

Breathwork is Key
Breathwork, or pranayama, is another essential component. Specific breathing techniques are used to stimulate energy flow, calm the mind, and prepare the body for meditation. The practice often includes dynamic movements that synchronize with the breath, creating a rhythmic flow that promotes both physical vitality and mental clarity.
Kundalini Yoga differs from more commonly practiced forms of yoga, like Hatha or Vinyasa, in that it places a greater emphasis on internal experience rather than physical form. It is accessible to people of all ages and levels of physical ability, though it can be intense, especially on an emotional level. Practitioners are often drawn to Kundalini Yoga during times of transition or spiritual seeking.
